Uganda’s Farmers Embrace Technology to Boost Agriculture

Story

n a bid to modernize agriculture and increase productivity, farmers in Uganda are increasingly embracing technology.

From precision farming to mobile apps, technology is being used to improve crop yields, reduce costs, and enhance efficiency.

One such initiative is the “E-Farming” platform, launched by the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries in partnership with a local tech firm. The platform allows farmers to access vital information on weather patterns, soil conditions, and market prices, enabling them to make informed decisions.

“We are seeing a significant improvement in yields and productivity since we started using the E-Farming platform,” said Jane Nambirige, a farmer from Mukono district. “It’s like having an expert advisor at our fingertips.”

Another innovation is the use of drones for crop monitoring and spraying. Companies like “Aerial Uganda” are providing drone services to farmers, enabling them to identify issues early and reduce waste.

“Technology is revolutionizing agriculture in Uganda,” said Dr. Charles Owach, a lecturer at Makerere University’s College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences. “It’s enabling farmers to be more efficient, productive, and competitive.”

The government has also launched initiatives like the “National Agricultural Extension Strategy” to promote technology adoption among farmers.

As Uganda strives to become a middle-income country by 2040, technology in agriculture is expected to play a crucial role.

“Technology will drive the transformation of agriculture in Uganda,” said Hon. Vincent Bamulangaki Ssempijja, Minister of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries. “We are committed to supporting innovation and ensuring that our farmers have access to the tools they need to succeed.”
