Uganda’s Agri-Business Sector Sees Surge in Investment and Growth

Story

Uganda’s agri-business sector is experiencing a significant surge in investment and growth, driven by government initiatives, private sector investment, and increasing demand for agricultural products.

According to the Uganda Investment Authority, the country has seen a 25% increase in investment in the agri-business sector over the past year, with investors pumping in over UGX 1 trillion (approximately USD 275 million) into farming, processing, and marketing of agricultural products.

The growth in agri-business has also led to an increase in employment opportunities, with over 10,000 new jobs created in the sector in the past year alone.

“We are seeing a lot of interest from investors in the agri-business sector, particularly in areas such as coffee, cocoa, and cotton,” said Sheila Nduhukire, executive director of the Uganda Investment Authority. “The government’s efforts to improve the business environment and invest in infrastructure have made Uganda an attractive destination for investors.”

One of the success stories in Uganda’s agri-business sector is the coffee industry, which has seen a significant increase in production and exports over the past year. Coffee exports earned Uganda over UGX 1.2 trillion (approximately USD 330 million) in the past year, up from UGX 800 billion (approximately USD 220 million) the previous year.

“The coffee industry is one of the success stories in Uganda’s agri-business sector,” said Emmanuel Iyamulemye, managing director of the Uganda Coffee Development Authority. “We are seeing a lot of investment in coffee processing and marketing, which is driving growth and increasing incomes for farmers.”

The growth in agri-business has also led to an increase in the use of technology, with many farmers and agri-businesses adopting digital solutions to improve efficiency and productivity.

“Technology is playing a critical role in the growth of agri-business in Uganda,” said Robert Kafero, managing director of the Uganda Agri-Business Initiative. “We are seeing a lot of innovation in areas such as precision farming, digital marketing, and e-commerce
